Show me your number is the flagship project of SAFPU (South African Football Players Union). SAFPU, through this project, aims to provide life skills training to South Africa's professional football players who in turn can leverage their sporting status to advance positive messages about HIV and AIDS within their communities, and beyond.

With your help, the beautiful game can do much more than entertain its fans. With your help, this passionate sport can help many young South Africans find hope and improve their views towards the greatest threat they will face in the coming years, saving many, many lives.

SMYN Strategy HIV Infections Downwards

“There should be no shame, no discrimination, no recriminations. We must break the stigma surrounding AIDS.”
– Jacob Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa (29 Oct 2009)

STRATEGY DETAILS

  1. Training of soccer players on understanding and confronting HIV/AIDS with a focus of behaviour change and positive role-modelling.
  2. Community engagement events to communicate the messages of the campaign to the target audience. HIV and AIDS will be highlighted through increased focus on promoting regular VCT [Voluntary Counselling & Testing], which will involve the players in the testing process.
  3. Integrated Media & Communications (IMC) strategy whereby testimonies/ messages about success against HIV and AIDS will be broadcast and published (with a focus on wellness and mainstreaming HIV and AIDS), using the players as ambassadors for these messages. Various media platforms will be used for implementing the IMC.
  4. Competitive soccer game(s) involving a combination of players from the PSL and NFD teams. There will also be community soccer matches to encourage ownership and participation.
  5. In order to assess and quantify the impact of the project in helping government win the war against HIV and AIDS, an ongoing monitoring and evaluation mechanism will be put in place. This will assist in the reporting to various organs like SANAC (South African National AIDS Council).
